Bhutan Display Intent and Resilience in Loss to Bahrain
Bhutan’s Senior Men’s National Team put up a spirited fight against Bahrain today in the Thailand Open Men’s T20I Series. After winning the toss, Bhutan elected to bat first, aiming to set a competitive total.
Although the result didn’t go our way, there were encouraging signs from the batting unit. The intent was clear from the outset, with a few players scoring at strike rates of over 150, reflecting a positive and proactive approach. Ranjung Mikyo Dorji (16 off 8) and Gakul Kumar Ghalley (30 off 20) led the charge with aggressive stroke play. While the team couldn’t fully execute their plans and were restricted to 91 runs, this mindset is a promising sign and could benefit Bhutan in the upcoming matches.
The bowlers then put in a commendable effort, supported by tidy and clinical fielding, taking the game deep into the 18th over against a higher-ranked Bahrain side. Tashi Phuntsho picked up two key wickets, Karma Dorji and Tashi Dorji provided breakthroughs, and Ranjung Mikyo Dorji’s run out of Asif Ali highlighted sharp fielding. With an extra 25–30 runs on the board, the chase could have been much more challenging.
While Bahrain eventually reached 95 for 6 in 17.4 overs, Bhutan’s fighting spirit and positive intent were evident throughout. The team will look to carry these encouraging signs forward when they face hosts Thailand tomorrow, followed by Japan on Friday, aiming to turn intent into results in the remaining matches of the tournament.
