BHUTAN CRICKET HOSTS JAPANESE MINISTER FOR CRICKET DEVELOPMENT ENGAGEMENT
The Bhutan Cricket Council Board (BCCB) successfully convened its 3rd Cricket Development Committee (CDC) Meeting at its Head Office in Thimphu on 4th April 2026. The meeting brought together key stakeholders to review progress, strengthen development frameworks, and define the next phase of cricket’s growth in Bhutan.
The session opened with remarks from the Chairperson, who acknowledged the progress achieved to date and emphasized the need for continued collaboration, accountability, and innovation in driving the sport forward.
Key Highlights:
Coaching Development
The committee reported significant progress in strengthening the national coaching structure. U19 head coaches for both men’s and women’s teams have been appointed, while recruitment for a U16 national coach is currently underway. Plans are in motion to establish a comprehensive coaching panel, integrating both local and international expertise to build long-term capacity.
High-Performance and Player Development
A proposal to establish a year-round High-Performance Academy in Gelephu was a central focus of discussion. This will be complemented by expanded training initiatives in Thimphu. The committee emphasized a shift toward player-centric development, supported by structured training programs and enhanced performance tracking systems.
Data-Driven Systems
BCCB is actively transitioning toward a data-driven approach to support player selection, coaching decisions, and performance monitoring. This includes the introduction of digital reporting tools to improve transparency and efficiency.
Women’s Cricket Growth
The continued development of women’s cricket remains a priority. Key initiatives include leadership development programs, structured training pathways, and the introduction of a dedicated women’s tournament to strengthen competitive exposure.
Infrastructure Development
The committee reviewed plans for the construction and upgrading of cricket infrastructure across multiple dzongkhags, including Paro, Punakha, Wangdue, Samtse, and Trashigang. These efforts are aimed at strengthening grassroots participation and access to quality facilities.
Committees and Governance
To enhance governance and operational efficiency, key subcommittees—covering umpiring, scoring, coaching, media, and player representation—have been formalized. A dedicated media subcommittee will focus on improving the visibility and broadcast quality of cricket events nationwide.
Player Support and Policies
Discussions addressed player welfare, including allowances, equipment support for junior players, and revisions to the Players Grading Contract System (PGCS). The proposed updates aim to ensure greater flexibility and fairness within the system.
Future Initiatives
Looking ahead, BCCB plans to expand cricket into universities and academies, alongside the introduction of inter-college tournaments to strengthen long-term player development pathways.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of BCCB’s commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive cricket ecosystem through strategic planning, infrastructure investment, and enhanced opportunities for players across Bhutan.
