Nestled in Gelephu, Sarpang District, the Gelephu International Cricket Ground (GICG) is Bhutan’s premier international-standard cricket stadium. As the home of the Bhutan men’s and women’s national cricket teams, GICG hosts top-tier domestic tournaments, international T20 matches, and elite training programs.

With world-class turf pitches, modern practice facilities, and professional stadium infrastructure, it serves as the centerpiece of Bhutan’s cricket development, inspiring players and fans alike.

Bhutan’s first international-standard cricket stadium, the Gelephu International Cricket Ground, was officially inaugurated on February 17, 2024. The ceremony was graced by HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, marking a historic milestone for cricket in the Kingdom.

Development Timeline

  • 2016: Construction begins
  • February 17, 2024: Official inaugurated by HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, marking Bhutan’s first international-standard cricket ground 
  • 2021: Ground used for national team training and preparation
  • January 2023: First-ever National Men’s Championship (T20) held, testing pitches and operations

Playing & Practice Areas:

  • 6 natural turf match pitches for official games
  • 4 natural turf practice pitches and 2 artificial turf pitches for year-round training
  • Main arena spanning 4–4.5 acres within a 6-acre site

Stadium Infrastructure:

  • Two-storey pavilion with dedicated team dressing rooms
  • Rooms for media, officials, and umpires
  • VIP stand and natural seating for ~2,000 spectators
  • Support facilities including washrooms, parking, and entrance gates

International Tournaments & Match Highlights

The Gelephu International Cricket Ground (GICG) has quickly established itself as Bhutan’s premier hub for international cricket.

Since its inauguration, it has hosted a range of high-profile tournaments, including the Bhutan T20I Quadrangular Series 2024, featuring Bhutan, Indonesia, Maldives, and Thailand, as well as the Myanmar Tour of Bhutan 2025, a bilateral T20I series.

GICG also marked the historic first home series for Bahrain during the Bhutan vs Bahrain 2025 T20Is, and it is set to host the Lotus Cup Women’s T20I Tri-Series 2026, featuring Bhutan, Hong Kong China, and Malaysia.

The ground has already witnessed remarkable performances, including Bhutan’s highest team total of 216/8 against Myanmar, Namgay Thinley’s century, and Sonam Yeshey’s best bowling figures of 8/7, showcasing the competitive spirit and growing stature of cricket in Bhutan.
