His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck graciously granted an audience to the Bhutan Cricket family and felicitated Sonam Yeshey along with the Bhutan Cricket Senior Team on the occasion of a historic world record achieved by Bhutan in Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket.
During the audience, HRH congratulated the Bhutan Cricket fraternity for a milestone that has firmly placed Bhutan cricket on the global sporting map. HRH acknowledged the collective effort of the players, coaches, management, and administrators, noting that such achievements are the result of long-term vision, teamwork, and unwavering commitment.
The historic moment was created during Bhutan’s T20I match against Myanmar in Gelephu, where Sonam Yeshey produced the best bowling figures ever recorded in T20I cricket, claiming an extraordinary 8 wickets for just 7 runs. The spell saw Myanmar being bowled out for a very low total and paved the way for a dominant victory for Team Bhutan. It marked the first time in men’s T20I history that a bowler has taken eight wickets in a single match, making the achievement even more significant as it was accomplished on home soil.
HRH reflected on Sonam Yeshey’s inspiring journey, acknowledging the discipline, dedication, and perseverance he has shown since beginning his cricketing career at the age of 12. HRH noted that his achievement stands as a testament to what sustained effort, focus, and belief in long-term development can achieve.
HRH also acknowledged the remarkable growth of cricket in Bhutan, noting its evolution from humble beginnings to becoming one of the prominent sporting federations in the country today. HRH expressed happiness at seeing Bhutan increasingly represented on the global sporting stage and recognized cricket’s role in bringing international recognition to the nation.
HRH further commended the Bhutan Cricket Senior Team for their overall performance, highlighting the unity, discipline, and competitive spirit displayed throughout the match and the tournament. The collective contribution of the team in bowling, fielding, and execution played a crucial role in complementing the historic performance and securing a comprehensive result for Bhutan.
In closing, HRH conveyed appreciation to the Board Members, management, coaches, and support staff of the Bhutan Cricket Federation for their leadership and commitment in driving positive transformation within the federation. HRH noted that this historic achievement will serve as a powerful source of inspiration for young cricketers across the country and further strengthen Bhutan’s growing presence in international cricket.
