BIFA CUP 2026

BIFA Cup 2026 Kicks Off with Grand Opening and Strong Start for Dragon XI

The second edition of the BIFA Cup 2026 commenced on a distinguished note at the Gelephu International Cricket Ground, setting the stage for a tournament that reflects both sporting excellence and regional collaboration.

The opening ceremony was graced by Dasho Dr. Lotay Tshering, Governor of Gelephu Mindfulness City, as the Chief Guest, alongside a host of senior dignitaries and representatives from Bhutan and India. Their presence underscored the significance of the tournament as a platform that extends beyond competition, reinforcing shared values of partnership, development, and mutual respect.

Held under the theme “Beyond Boundaries,” the BIFA Cup continues to evolve as a meaningful initiative that integrates competitive cricket with long term development objectives. The inclusion of both men’s and women’s teams reflects a deliberate and progressive approach, ensuring that opportunities for growth and exposure are extended across all levels of the game.

On the field, the opening match delivered a composed and tactically disciplined performance from Dragon XI against Bodoland. Batting first, Bodoland were restricted to 86 for 8 in their 20 overs. Despite contributions from Munna Gowala and Sagor Das, Dragon XI maintained consistent control through structured bowling efforts and timely breakthroughs, limiting any sustained momentum.

In response, Dragon XI approached the chase with clarity and balance, reaching 89 for 6 in 16.3 overs. The innings was anchored by Namgay Thinley, whose measured 41 off 43 balls provided stability at the top. While Bodoland showed resilience with wickets through the middle overs, the chase remained firmly within control, reflecting composure and awareness under pressure.

Namgay Thinley was rightfully named Player of the Match, contributing not only with the bat but also delivering a disciplined spell of 1 for 15 in his 4 overs, exemplifying the value of all round performance in limited overs cricket.

The second fixture between Himalayan XI and Kokrajhar CCC (Men’s) began with promising intensity, however, persistent rainfall led to the match being called off, with both teams awarded one point each.

As the tournament progresses, the opening day has already established a clear narrative, one defined by structure, competitiveness, and intent. The BIFA Cup 2026 stands not only as a contest of teams, but as a reflection of the growing stature of cricket in Bhutan and the neighbouring regions, driven by shared vision and sustained collaboration.

With strong foundations both on and off the field, the tournament continues to embody the spirit of “Beyond Boundaries,” where cricket serves as a bridge for development, connection, and excellence.
