Beyond the Boundary: How Ugyen Dorji is Taking Bhutanese Umpiring to the International Stage

When the first ball is bowled, the spotlight naturally follows the batters and bowlers. Scoreboards celebrate centuries, wickets, and match-winning performances, while the loudest applause belongs to those wearing the team colours. Yet standing just a few yards away is another figure whose decisions shape every moment of the contest—the umpire.

It is a role that demands precision, composure, and complete impartiality. When an umpire performs well, they are rarely noticed. But the integrity of the game depends on them.

Today, one Bhutanese official is quietly carrying that responsibility onto the international stage.

Mr. Ugyen Dorji is currently officiating at the ACC Men’s Challenger Cup 2026 in Singapore after successfully completing his duties at the Asian Games Qualifier Men’s 2026. These appointments represent his second and third tournaments under the Asian Cricket Council pathway, reflecting the confidence placed in him and marking another important milestone for Bhutanese umpiring.

His journey into international officiating began at the ACC U16 Tournament, where he made his debut as an ACC umpire. While these appointments may appear to be rapid progress, they are the result of years spent building experience across Bhutan’s domestic cricket structure.

Long before stepping onto ACC grounds, Ugyen became a familiar presence in domestic competitions throughout the country. Weekend after weekend, he officiated matches that demanded concentration, consistency, and a thorough understanding of the Laws of Cricket. Those assignments may not have attracted headlines, but they formed the foundation of his development and prepared him for greater responsibilities.

His experience has also been shaped by Bhutan’s growing international calendar. From the BOB Bhutan Quadrangular Series 2024 through to the Lotus Cup 2026, he has officiated in five international home series and tournaments organized by the Bhutan Cricket Council Board. Working alongside players, officials, and teams from different countries has strengthened his exposure to international standards while contributing to the successful delivery of these events.

Speaking from Singapore, Ugyen expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent Bhutan and acknowledged the support extended by the Bhutan Cricket Council Board.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me by the Board. Representing Bhutan on the international stage as an umpire is a privilege. Spending time with senior and experienced umpires is something I truly value because every match and every conversation becomes an opportunity to learn and improve.”

For Ugyen, the greatest value of these appointments extends beyond the matches themselves. Working alongside experienced international officials offers lessons in match management, communication, decision making, and handling pressure-knowledge that cannot be fully gained from a rulebook alone. Every tournament becomes an opportunity to refine his craft and bring those experiences back to Bhutan.

His progression also reflects the broader evolution of Bhutanese cricket. The strength of a cricket system is measured not only by the players it produces but also by the quality of its coaches, administrators, scorers, and match officials. As the game continues to develop in the country, building internationally recognized officials is equally important in strengthening its credibility and reputation.

Ugyen Dorji’s journey from Bhutan’s domestic grounds to consecutive ACC appointments demonstrates that Bhutan is steadily producing officials capable of performing on the regional stage. His achievement is a personal milestone, but it is also a sign of a maturing cricket ecosystem. One that is contributing to the game beyond runs, wickets, and scoreboards.

While players compete for victories, officials safeguard the spirit and integrity of cricket itself. Through his dedication and continued progress, Ugyen Dorji is proving that Bhutan’s presence in international cricket is growing not only through those who play the game, but also through those entrusted to uphold it.
